New London is facing a budget crisis related to waste…

To keep providing residents with waste collection services at the lowest cost possible, New London must reduce waste and increase recycling.¬† The City’s waste collection infrastructure including trucks and carts is ageing and must quickly be replaced. In an effort to do this with as minimal impact to taxpayers as possible, we are working with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) to explore SMART Trash, an innovative approach to paying for these items and waste collection services.

About 40% of Connecticut municipalities no longer provide any trash collection, mainly due to rising costs. However, New London thinks it’s an essential service. A SMART Trash approach would allow us to maintain service while avoiding tax increases by reducing waste, increasing recycling, cutting costs, and creating an equitable solution¬† for all residents.
